Education CS Breaks Silence as Fake KCSE Results Claim Sparks Online Storm
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has strongly dismissed viral claims suggesting that the government had quietly released the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results without public notice.
The reports, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, alleged that Kapsabet Boys High School had emerged as the top-performing school nationally, despite long-standing government regulations that prohibit the ranking of schools in national examinations.
The misinformation was fuelled by a doctored screenshot purporting to show Ogamba announcing the results during a televised address — a claim the Ministry of Education has now categorically denied.
“Treat such fake and misleading news with the contempt it deserves,” Ogamba said in a firm statement issued on Saturday.
The Cabinet Secretary stressed that the official release of KCSE results can only be conducted by the Ministry of Education, working through the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), warning parents, candidates and schools against relying on unverified online claims.
A senior source at KNEC echoed the warning, urging calm amid growing anxiety among candidates and parents.
“Relax — tell the parents and all concerned stakeholders to relax,” the source told flashnews.co.ke.
“Only the Ministry is officially mandated to communicate on result release dates. We do not understand the pressure and misinformation doing the rounds. Historically, we have never issued official statements giving exact release dates.”
Ogamba Confirms January Timeline
The Education CS also revisited his earlier public remarks regarding the expected release timeline for the 2024 KCSE results.
Speaking in December 2024 during the Omogusii Cultural Festival at Kenyoro School Grounds in North Mugirango Constituency, Nyamira County, Ogamba stated that the results would be released in the second week of January 2025, ahead of January 15.
“The KCSE examination results will be released within the next two weeks,” Ogamba said at the time.
“Traditionally, KCSE results are announced in January, and we are keeping to that tradition.”
He further clarified confusion surrounding December exam announcements, noting that results historically released at the end of the year were KCPE results, which were not conducted in 2024 following the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“The examinations previously released in December were KCPE results. This year, we did not have that examination, and this may have caused confusion,” he explained.
Record Candidate Numbers
The 2024 KCSE examinations, which began on October 22 and concluded in November, were conducted across 10,755 examination centres nationwide.
A total of 965,501 candidates sat for the exams — the highest number in KCSE history, marking a significant rise from 903,138 candidates in 2023.
KNEC confirmed that the marking process was finalised on December 13, 2024, following intensive work by examiners across 35 designated marking centres.
Authorities have now urged the public to ignore online speculation and await official communication from the Ministry of Education.
