Eliud Owalo, Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President, has been appointed as the new patron of Gor Mahia Football Club, replacing the late Raila Odinga.
Club chairman Ambrose Rachier confirmed that Owalo’s appointment took effect on November 1, following a previous notice naming him acting patron after Odinga’s death.
“Gor Mahia Football Club confirms the appointment of Eliud Owalo as the substantive club patron with effect from the first day of November 2025,” Rachier said in a statement.
Owalo’s appointment ends a long chapter defined by Odinga’s decades-long patronage of Kenya’s most successful football club. The former Prime Minister was a lifelong supporter whose Luo roots were closely linked to the club’s identity.
Owalo, who previously served as Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and the Digital Economy, has maintained strong ties with Gor Mahia despite shifting political allegiances.
As deputy patron, he supported player welfare, attended matches, and helped fund initiatives, including a KSh20 million club bus unveiled in 2023.
Founded in 1968, Gor Mahia remains Kenya’s most decorated football club with 21 league titles, though its history has been marked by financial and administrative challenges.
