Embakasi North MP Gakuya Backs Ruto’s Affordable Housing After Years of Criticism
Embakasi North MP James Gakuya has changed his tune on President William Ruto’s Affordable Housing Program and is now backing it. He made the declaration at a public function in Mukuru Kwa Njenga on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.
The legislator who has been a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza government surprised many by supporting the initiative just weeks before the President’s visit to the area.
Gakuya told residents that while he has opposed many government policies, he believes the housing project should be supported if it benefits locals.
“It’s only right to welcome a good project like this so that our people benefit,” he said, urging the community to ensure ownership of the new homes remains with residents and not outsiders.
He warned that proper vetting was necessary to prevent non-locals from taking over the units. “The message is simple—let these houses belong to us, not strangers,” he added.
Gakuya said his support is conditional on the community being the main beneficiaries. “If this project continues in that direction, I will support it,” he said.
Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege also backed the government’s housing agenda during the function, dismissing those who have questioned its implementation.
“The agenda is clear—‘Boma Yangu’ is about eliminating slums and providing decent housing,” she said. Chege told residents that the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development will clarify any concerns.
Her remarks were directed at those who she said have been spreading misinformation. “There’s a lot of propaganda out there, but the ministry is ready to answer,” she said.
Political analysts say Gakuya’s endorsement is a big shift ahead of President Ruto’s visit to Mukuru Kwa Njenga phase two where the government will showcase housing projects as part of its flagship agenda.
