FKF President Suspended Amid KSh42M CHAN Funds Probe

FKF Chief Hussein Mohammed Suspended in KSh42M CHAN Cash Storm as Mariga Takes Charge

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Rashid Mohammed has been dramatically forced to step aside following explosive allegations of financial impropriety involving KSh42 million earmarked for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The bombshell decision was reached on April 24 during a high-stakes National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which also saw Acting Chief Executive Officer Dennis Gicheru and NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim ordered to step aside pending investigations.

In a sweeping move aimed at containing the deepening crisis, the NEC appointed Deputy President Macdonald Mariga as acting FKF President with immediate effect, tasking him with stabilising the federation as a forensic audit gets underway.

A statement signed by nine of the federation’s 14 NEC members outlined the drastic action:
With immediate effect, Mr Hussein Rashid Mohammed do step aside from his role and position as President of Football Kenya Federation… Mr Dennis Gicheru will step aside from his position as Acting General Secretary…

The committee said the move was necessary to allow independent investigations by FKF, national, and international bodies into “alleged financial impropriety of public funds and resources, and other statutory breaches.”

As part of the crackdown, the NEC ordered the immediate freezing of all FKF bank accounts associated with Mohammed in his official capacity, in what insiders describe as a bid to preserve evidence and prevent interference.

The federation will now engage an independent forensic auditor to scrutinise funds received from key stakeholders, including the Confederation of African Football (CAF), FIFA, and Kenya’s Ministry of Sports—raising the stakes in a scandal that threatens to shake the foundations of Kenyan football governance.

At the centre of the storm is the alleged disappearance of approximately KSh42 million from CHAN-related accounts, sparking serious questions about financial oversight and accountability within the federation.

The NEC cited a range of allegations facing the suspended officials, including financial impropriety, conflict of interest, and irregular procurement practices.

However, Mohammed has fiercely denied the claims, dismissing them as a calculated smear campaign designed to derail reforms within the federation.

Once I started the process of cleaning house, it was inevitable that corruption would fight back,” he said.
Through such a malicious campaign, a lifetime of sacrifice… can go up in smoke. I shall not allow it.

The crisis has exposed deep divisions within FKF leadership, with at least three NEC members—Charles Njagi, Ahmedqadar Mohammed Dabar, and Kenneth Rungu—absent from the decisive meeting.

With public confidence hanging in the balance, acting president Mariga now faces the urgent task of convening a crisis meeting to chart a path forward and restore stability in the embattled federation.
