Former Kenya Navy Commander Aboud Abdallah Awadh Rafraouf Passes Away
The nation mourns the loss of a distinguished military leader. Former Commander of the Kenya Navy, Aboud Abdallah Awadh Rafraouf, has passed away. His death was confirmed by former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar on Sunday, February 15. Rafraouf died the previous day, Saturday, February 14.

In his tribute, Omar described Rafraouf as a figure who embodied honour, discipline, and dedication to Kenya’s defence forces.
“A distinguished officer and former Commander of the Kenya Navy, he served our nation with honour, discipline and unwavering commitment,” Omar said.
He added that Rafraouf was part of a generation that played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s defence institutions.
“He was part of the generation that shaped and strengthened our defence institutions, and his leadership during defining national moments reflected steadiness, patriotism and duty,” Omar remarked.
Impact on Kenya’s Defence Forces
Rafraouf’s contribution to the Kenya Navy was significant. According to Omar, he helped fortify one of the country’s critical defence arms, leaving a lasting legacy in naval operations and coastal security.
“To his family, friends, and colleagues in the Kenya Defence Forces, I extend my heartfelt condolences,” Omar said.
Career Highlights
Rafraouf took office as the 7th Commander of the Kenya Navy on May 2, 1998, succeeding Joseph Kibwana. He led the service until November 30, 2001, when Omudho Awitta took over.
After completing his tenure, Rafraouf retired from active service in 2002, closing a distinguished chapter in the Kenya Defence Forces. During his time, he was credited with strengthening the navy’s operational capacity, boosting coastal defence, and overseeing major security initiatives.
