Former Minister and Long-Serving Kilgoris MP Gideon Konchellah Dies After Reported Cardiac Arrest

Kenya is mourning the loss of veteran politician Gideon Sitelu Konchellah, a former Cabinet Minister and long-serving Member of Parliament for Kilgoris Constituency, who has reportedly died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that Konchellah passed away on Saturday, June 13, prompting an outpouring of grief from political leaders, residents of Narok County, and supporters across the country.

The late politician was one of the most recognizable figures in Narok politics, having represented Kilgoris Constituency for nearly two decades. During his political career, Konchellah served under different political parties, including the Party of National Unity (PNU), the United Republican Party (URP), and later the Jubilee Party.

His death marks the end of a lengthy public service career that saw him play a significant role both in Parliament and within the Executive.

Konchellah served as Kenya’s Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons during the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki between 2006 and 2007. During his tenure at the ministry, he oversaw key reforms in the country’s immigration and refugee management systems.

One of the most notable milestones associated with his leadership was the implementation of the Refugee Act of 2006, a landmark piece of legislation that strengthened Kenya’s legal and institutional framework for handling refugee affairs and protection.

Throughout his years in Parliament, Konchellah was widely regarded as an influential political figure in the Maa community and a key voice in national discussions affecting pastoralist regions and marginalized communities.

News of his passing spread rapidly on Saturday, with leaders and residents expressing shock and sadness over the death of the seasoned politician.

“This is a huge loss not only to the people of Kilgoris but also to the nation,” a source close to the family said, describing Konchellah as a dedicated public servant who devoted much of his life to politics and community development.

At the time of publication, neither the family nor government authorities had released an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding his death.

Funeral arrangements and additional details are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Konchellah leaves behind a political legacy spanning nearly two decades, during which he became one of the most influential leaders from Narok County and a prominent figure in Kenya’s political landscape.
