Four Dead After Pit Latrine Collapses at Nyamira School During Rescue Operation
Four people have died after a pit latrine under construction collapsed at Chinche Primary School in Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County, triggering a desperate rescue operation that continued for hours.
The tragedy occurred on the evening of Friday, July 24, when the pit being constructed under a National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) project caved in, trapping workers beneath tonnes of loose soil.
According to witnesses, two men were initially trapped after the walls of the excavation gave way.
In a desperate attempt to rescue them, three other people reportedly entered the pit. The soil collapsed again, burying the rescuers and turning the operation into a larger disaster.
Residents, police officers, emergency personnel and volunteers gathered at the school as efforts intensified to reach those trapped underground.
An excavator was eventually brought in to remove the soil and assist with the rescue operation. However, residents alleged that the machinery accidentally struck some of those trapped beneath the debris.
The allegation had not been independently verified by authorities by the time of publication, and the precise circumstances surrounding the deaths remained under investigation.
One survivor was eventually pulled from the collapsed pit with critical injuries before being rushed to hospital for emergency medical attention.
The incident has left residents of Kiabonyoru Ward questioning whether adequate safety precautions were taken before excavation work began.
Locals claimed that warnings had previously been raised over the condition of the ground, which they described as loose and potentially unstable.
Residents also questioned why appropriate engineering measures had allegedly not been put in place before digging such a deep pit at a school.
The concerns have raised broader questions about safety standards in publicly funded construction projects, particularly where deep excavations are undertaken in areas used by children and members of the public.
Authorities are now investigating the collapse to establish what caused the pit walls to fail, whether construction and occupational safety requirements were followed, and what happened during the subsequent rescue operation.
The deaths have also renewed calls for contractors undertaking public projects to carry out proper site assessments and implement appropriate safety measures before beginning excavation work.
As police and county officials continue their investigations, families and residents are awaiting answers over how the construction project was approved, whether safety warnings were acted upon and whether the tragedy could have been prevented.
