Gov’t Releases Sh881 Million to Cushion Vulnerable Children Under Inua Jamii
The government has released Sh881 million to support households caring for orphans and vulnerable children under the Inua Jamii social protection programme.
In a statement on Monday, the Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services announced that Sh881,074,000 has been allocated for the August 2025 payment cycle of the Cash Transfer for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (CT-OVC) programme.
A total of 440,537 households are enrolled in the programme and each is receiving Sh2,000. Payments are being done through the eCitizen platform to promote transparency and efficiency.
“This is for the August 2025 payment and each beneficiary household is getting Sh2,000,” said Principal Secretary for Children Services, Carren Ageng’o.
CT-OVC is part of the broader Inua Jamii programme which targets vulnerable groups including orphans, persons living with severe disabilities and senior citizens. The programme aims to cushion families from poverty while supporting child welfare, education and nutrition.
The ministry said the cash transfers help families to cover basic needs such as food, school fees and healthcare while also encouraging fostering and retention of vulnerable children within communities.
Independent evaluations have shown that regular payments under Inua Jamii lead to household stability, higher school enrollment and reduction in child vulnerability.
This year’s funding comes at a time when low income families are struggling with the rising cost of living. By using digital platforms like eCitizen, the government is trying to reduce leakages, ensure accountability and fast track disbursements.
Over 440,000 households are benefiting this month alone, CT-OVC is one of Kenya’s biggest social safety net programmes.
