Grade 10 Placement Letters Set to Be Issued Before Christmas, Education PS Confirms
Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok has confirmed that Grade 10 placement letters will be released before Christmas, as the Ministry of Education moves to ensure a smooth transition for more than one million learners into senior school.
Speaking in Kikuyu on Monday, November 17, the PS said the government had already mapped out a clear timetable that will see the placement process begin one week after the release of the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results.
The 2025 KJSEA exams, sat by 1.1 million Grade 9 learners, were administered between October 27 and November 3. The Ministry expects to unveil the results by December 11, paving the way for the start of senior school placements.
“We expect that the results will be out by December 11, and we are going to do placement immediately after that so that they can go to senior school,” Bitok stated.
He further affirmed that the government has established a well-coordinated plan to ensure that learners report to their respective senior schools by January 12, 2026. “We expect the students to report on January 12, and that is the plan. We have issued the guidelines to guide the process from the beginning to the end, so there is no confusion on our side.”
No Changes in School Fees
Amid growing concerns from parents over rising living costs, Bitok reiterated that the government has not increased school fees for the upcoming academic year. He underscored that any adjustments would only be communicated officially by the State.
“The policy on free education is still in place, and the government has not made any changes in this policy. All our learners will continue enjoying free primary and secondary education. There are no changes in fees; let me make that very clear,” he said.
The PS added that the Ministry of Education is working closely with the National Treasury to guarantee timely release of capitation funds—an issue that has previously triggered financial strain in schools and disrupted learning activities.
Nationwide Verification Exercise Nearing Completion
Bitok also revealed that a nationwide school and learner verification exercise is in its final stages. The audit, triggered by concerns raised by the Office of the Auditor General, aims to establish the accurate number of students and schools before capitation is disbursed next year.
“One of the reasons we are doing the verification process is to confirm how many students and schools we have and confirm the schools’ account numbers. We shall not release capitation to schools that have not been verified,” he said.
He added that the ministry has spent two months collecting data, with a detailed report expected soon. “We have done our part for the past two months by ensuring that we capture this data. We are finalising, and we shall release a report very soon on the number of learners and the number of schools.”
The move is expected to tighten accountability and ensure schools receive funds based strictly on verified enrolment figures.
