Graphic First Image Emerges from Scene of Diogo Jota’s Fatal Car Accident
The first picture from the scene of the car crash that killed Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, has been released, showing the burnt out wreckage of their car and emergency services at the roadside in the Spanish province of Zamora.
The accident happened around 00:30 on Thursday, June 27 on the A-52 motorway near the town of Cernadilla. According to the emergency services in Castilla y León, a tyre on the Lamborghini the brothers were in burst and the car crashed and then caught fire.
Medical units from the Mombuey Health Centre, Zamora Traffic Police and Fire Brigade responded to multiple 112 calls. The Castilla y León authorities confirmed:
“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52… A car was involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire. Medical personnel confirmed two people died at the scene.”
The new image shows the aftermath of the crash – twisted metal, burnt debris and first responders. The extent of the fire damage meant the bodies couldn’t be identified until later, according to El País.

The tragedy comes just 12 days after Jota married his long term partner Rute Cardoso in Portugal on June 22. The couple had three children. Andre Silva, 26, was also a professional footballer and played for FC Penafiel.
Liverpool FC said:
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota… The club have been informed the 28-year-old has died in a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre… We request privacy for the family, friends, teammates and club staff as they come to terms with this devastating loss.”
Pedro Proença, President of the Portuguese Football Federation, said:
*”Diogo Jota was not only an exceptional player with nearly 50 caps, but a happy and respected figure in the football world… The Portuguese Football Federation has asked UEFA to observe a minute’s silence in Thursday’s women’s European Championship match against Spain.”*More to follow.
