Itumbi Hijacks Gen Z TikTokers’ Hospital Dream to Sing Ruto’s Praises

President Ruto’s administration has jumped on the bandwagon of the trending TikTokers’ hospital project, shining the spotlight on government projects while praising the Gen Z led movement.

Speaking on Wednesday, October 1, during a TikTok creators’ workshop at Glee Hotel in Kiambu, Dennis Itumbi, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination, commended the content creators for their idea to build a free hospital.

But in his praise, Itumbi linked the initiative to President Ruto’s healthcare agenda. “That’s a great idea. Kenyans have built hospitals through offerings — that’s why we have faith-based institutions. President Ruto is also building 70 hospitals for the KDF,” he said.

Itumbi went further, saying the TikTokers’ move is in line with the government’s promise of universal healthcare. “If TikTokers can organize themselves and build another hospital, that’s great. Such initiatives are welcome,” he added.

The TikTokers’ plan gained momentum after the emotional story of Kaluma Boy, a 17 year old who went viral for documenting his father’s stroke. His daily videos showing him taking care of his father and paying for his medical bills moved thousands of Kenyans. Last weekend, hundreds of well wishers went to Othaya, Nyeri County to support the teen and his family.

That outpouring of support inspired the TikTokers to rally behind the idea of building a modern hospital to help families who face the frustrations of Kenya’s public healthcare system — from medicine shortages to understaffing.

While Gen Z creators see the project as a people driven solution to healthcare problems, Itumbi framed it as an extension of the government’s own efforts. The move shows how the government is keen to associate itself with youth led initiatives that are trending.
