Junet Mohamed Faces Mounting Pressure as Azimio la Umoja Parties Demand His Resignation
Kenyan politics is once again in turmoil as a coalition of parties under the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance has called for the immediate resignation of National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, citing concerns over his conduct and leadership.
The call, spearheaded by National Liberal Party leader Augustus Kyalo Muli, was made in a joint statement on Wednesday, January 14, in which over 10 Azimio-affiliated parties accused Junet of making “reckless and defamatory utterances” that tarnish the legacy of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta served the nation with dignity, protected Kenya’s territorial integrity, upheld national cohesion, and shepherded a peaceful transition of power,” Muli said. “Any attempt to diminish that record is dishonest and an affront to millions of Kenyans.”
The parties also raised concerns over the mismanagement of agents’ funds during the 2022 general elections, arguing that Junet’s oversight failures weakened grassroots operations, compromised electoral vigilance, and contributed to the coalition’s repeated losses in its presidential bids.
“Such conduct goes beyond incompetence and reflects a pattern of internal sabotage that eroded trust at crucial moments,” the statement read. “In light of these developments, we call for the immediate retirement of Junet Mohamed from all Azimio leadership positions.”
The coalition is urging former President Kenyatta to convene a consultative meeting with all Azimio-affiliated parties to chart a new leadership course following significant political exits, including the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Deputy Party Leader Martha Karua, and now the anticipated resignation of Junet.
The parties stressed that Azimio la Umoja, founded on March 12, 2022, as a vehicle for unity, democratic reforms, and progressive governance, must now cleanse itself of actions and actors that undermine its mission.
The proposed meeting, they say, should fill vacant positions in the National Executive Council and the Council, restore internal discipline, and position the coalition for a stronger showing in the 2027 general elections.
Political analysts suggest that this latest dispute highlights ongoing factionalism within Azimio, raising questions about the coalition’s ability to remain united and competitive as Kenya approaches its next presidential vote.
