Kakamega County Hospital Staff Face Half Salaries as SHA Delays Payments
The Kakamega County Government has informed contracted medical workers that they will only receive half of their August 2025 pay following delayed remittances from the Social Health Authority (SHA).
In an official memo dated August 28, 2025, county health officer Hillary Kaverenge addressed the matter, noting that the delays have created a severe financial strain on hospitals.
“The hospital has not received any payments from SHA for the past two months, causing a major cash shortfall,” the letter read in part.
The announcement came after a management meeting on August 27, where it was disclosed that hospital revenue collections had also declined by more than 50 percent.
“Should funding from SHA not be received by the end of this month, the accounts office will process only half of your net salaries, with the outstanding amounts cleared once funds are disbursed,” Kaverenge explained.
While apologizing to the affected staff, county officials emphasized that the situation was beyond their immediate control.
This development piles more pressure on the Social Health Authority, which has already been under fire for inefficiencies, delayed disbursements, and allegations of financial mismanagement.
