Kalonzo Calls for Opposition  Emergency Meeting Over Juja MP George Koimburi Alleged Abduction

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced plans for an emergency opposition meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, to address what he describes as an escalating pattern of political intimidation following the alleged abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi.

Speaking in a statement issued Monday, Musyoka stated that the opposition will meet to deliberate on the current political climate and determine a course of action in response to recent developments. “The Opposition is convening tomorrow to assess the current state of political intimidation in the country by the Kenya Kwanza regime,” he said.

The call for an urgent meeting comes after the alleged forced disappearance of MP Koimburi on Sunday, May 25, during a church service. Witnesses claim that the lawmaker was forcibly taken by unknown individuals in a Subaru vehicle, prompting widespread alarm. Less than 24 hours later, Koimburi was reportedly found in distress at the Jacaranda Coffee Plantation in Kibichoi, Ruiru, Kiambu County.

Videos circulating online appear to show the MP in visible pain, sparking fears that he may have been tortured. He was later admitted to Karen Hospital for treatment. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from opposition leaders, with Kalonzo Musyoka warning that such actions undermine the safety of all Kenyans. “If an MP who is entitled to security gets abducted in broad daylight, it means Kenyans are on their own,” he warned.

While it remains unclear who will attend the emergency opposition meeting, political figures such as People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—both vocal critics of the current administration—are expected to be present.

In response to the controversy, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) denied any involvement in Koimburi’s disappearance. Authorities also suggested that the MP may have staged the incident. According to the DCI, Koimburi was being sought in connection with alleged land fraud and misuse of Constituency Development Funds (CDF), with investigations dating back to Friday, May 23.

Koimburi’s case follows a recent pattern involving opposition figures facing legal challenges. Just days earlier, Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya was arrested and later released on bond after being charged with graft.

The opposition’s upcoming meeting is expected to focus on charting a political response to what they view as a crackdown on dissent. As the situation develops, attention remains fixed on the government’s handling of the allegations and the broader implications for Kenya’s political climate.
