Kang’ata, Osotsi Condemn Shooting at Linda Mwananchi Rally as Driver Is Hit by Gunfire

Kang’ata and Osotsi Break Silence After Driver Shot During Chaotic Linda Mwananchi Rally in Nyahururu as Leaders Accuse Security Agencies of Failing Opposition

Tensions flared in Nyahururu on Sunday after leaders affiliated with the Linda Mwananchi movement alleged that Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata’s driver was shot during a political rally, triggering fresh accusations against security agencies over the safety of opposition activities.

The incident, which unfolded during the movement’s campaign event on Sunday, July 12, 2026, has intensified the already heated political atmosphere, with opposition leaders claiming the attack reflects a growing pattern of violence targeting their public engagements.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata was among the first to confirm the incident, revealing through a statement posted on his X account that his driver, identified as Gitari, had been shot while accompanying him during the rally.

“My driver Gitari has been shot during the Linda Mwananchi Rally,” Kang’ata wrote.

Although the circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear, the governor’s statement sparked widespread concern among supporters and fellow leaders attending the event.

Speaking shortly afterwards, leaders within the Linda Mwananchi coalition, including Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, strongly condemned the incident and questioned why security agencies had allegedly failed to provide adequate protection despite the political gathering being a public event.

The leaders further alleged that the Nyahururu incident was not isolated, claiming it followed earlier confrontations that disrupted Linda Mwananchi activities in Kisii and Kisumu.

According to the coalition, supporters have repeatedly faced hostility during recent rallies, prompting demands for authorities to investigate the latest shooting and guarantee the safety of political meetings regardless of affiliation.

The allegations are likely to pile pressure on security agencies, which have yet to publicly explain the circumstances that led to the reported shooting.

As investigations continue, questions remain over who was responsible, the motive behind the attack, and the condition of the injured driver.

The incident is expected to reignite debate over political intolerance and security during campaign activities as the country’s political temperatures continue to rise ahead of future elections.
