KeNHA Extends Mombasa-Nairobi Highway Closure at Changamwe for 11 Days
KeNHA has extended Mombasa-Nairobi Highway closure to 11 days to facilitate road and drainage works
KeNHA has extended the closure of the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange to 11 days to allow for road and drainage works.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 23, KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said the closure will now run from September 23 to October 4, 2025. The works will improve road connectivity along this critical corridor between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe area.
“KeNHA wishes to inform the public that road construction and drainage works on Mombasa-Nairobi (A8) Highway between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange will be extended to Saturday, October 4, 2025. These works are necessary to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the area,” the authority said.
Motorists have been advised to follow traffic marshals’ directions during this period. To minimize disruption, a traffic management plan has been put in place where vehicles will use part of the Nairobi-bound lane.
KeNHA had earlier planned the closure from August 23 to September 7, 2025 to allow for similar works. Kimeli had notified the public of the earlier traffic disruptions in a notice issued on August 19.
The Makupa-Changamwe stretch is one of the busiest in the coastal region and is a major entry and exit point to and from the Port of Mombasa. KeNHA confirmed that drainage works in this section started in November 2024.
The extended closure will improve road safety and traffic flow in the long run, despite the short term inconvenience to commuters.
