Kenya Airways Returns Boeing 777 to Service, Announces 50% Fare Discounts

Kenya Airways Brings Back Boeing 777 as Airline Unveils 50% Fare Discounts Ahead of Historic 50th Anniversary

Kenya Airways has announced the return of its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft to active service, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s recovery journey as it prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The national carrier revealed that passengers will have a rare opportunity to travel aboard one of its largest and most iconic aircraft on the Nairobi-Mombasa route, with promotional fares discounted by up to 50 per cent.

The move comes as Kenya Airways seeks to strengthen customer engagement while showcasing its renewed operational capacity ahead of a landmark year in the airline’s history.

Speaking during the official reintroduction of the aircraft on Wednesday, Kenya Airways Acting Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer George Kamal described the return as a major achievement for the carrier.

“Today marks a proud milestone for Kenya Airways as we welcome back our Boeing 777-300ER into our service,” Kamal said.

“This is more than a return of an aircraft. It’s a symbol of our resilience, our ambition and the progress we continue to make as Kenya’s national carrier.”

The Boeing 777-300ER, one of the largest aircraft in the Kenya Airways fleet, is renowned for its long-haul capabilities, extended range and increased passenger capacity. The aircraft has historically served some of the airline’s key international destinations.

In a strategic decision aimed at allowing local travellers to experience the aircraft before its return to international operations, Kenya Airways has deployed the wide-body jet on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa route.

“We have deliberately chosen to begin this journey on the Nairobi-Mombasa route, giving Kenyans the first opportunity to experience one of the most iconic aircraft in our fleet before it returns to international operations,” Kamal explained.

To further mark the occasion, the airline has launched a special fare promotion offering discounts of up to 50 per cent, a move intended to reward loyal customers as the carrier begins its countdown to five decades of operations.

“And to make this more exciting and to celebrate even more, we decided to make a big promotion on our fares, giving you a 50 per cent discount as we begin the countdown to Kenya Airways’ 50th anniversary,” Kamal said.

The airline boss noted that the offer serves as a gesture of appreciation to passengers who have remained loyal throughout Kenya Airways’ journey.

“This is our way of thanking our customers for being part of our journey over the past five decades,” he added.

The return of the Boeing 777-300ER is also expected to play a key role in strengthening the airline’s international network. Kenya Airways confirmed that the aircraft is scheduled to operate its inaugural international flight to London on July 17, 2026, marking its official return to long-haul service.

According to the airline, the deployment will enhance connectivity between Kenya and major global destinations while supporting its broader growth and expansion strategy.

“The return of our Boeing 777 also marks the beginning of another exciting chapter as the aircraft prepares for its inaugural flight to London on the 17th of July 2026, further strengthening our global connectivity to our customers, partners and the entire Kenya Airways family,” Kamal stated.

Kenya Airways has in recent years undertaken a gradual recovery programme aimed at improving operational efficiency, rebuilding profitability and expanding its route network after facing significant financial challenges.

As preparations for its golden jubilee celebrations gather momentum, the airline says it remains committed to maintaining high standards of safety, reliability and customer service while strengthening its role as a leading African carrier.

Thanking customers for their continued support, Kamal reaffirmed the airline’s vision of connecting the continent with the rest of the world.

“Together we continue connecting Africa to the world and the world to Africa,” he said.

The airline’s upcoming 50th anniversary is expected to feature a series of customer-focused initiatives and celebrations designed to commemorate five decades of service in the aviation industry.
