Kenya Power Explains How Customers Can Reverse Wrong Electricity Token Payments After Costly Mistakes

Customers who accidentally purchase electricity tokens using money meant for other expenses can apply for a reversal or reallocation of funds, according to Kenya Power.
The power utility company issued the clarification after a customer publicly appealed for help on social media, revealing that he had mistakenly used money set aside for rent to purchase prepaid electricity tokens.
The customer, who shared his predicament online, pleaded with the utility firm to reverse the transaction.
“Hello Kenya Power, I have bought tokens instead of paying my rent. Can you reverse the money?” he asked.

The appeal quickly attracted attention from Kenyans online, many of whom shared similar experiences involving mistaken token purchases through mobile money platforms.
Responding to the customer, Kenya Power confirmed that there is a formal process through which customers can request a reversal or reallocation of prepaid electricity purchases under specific circumstances.
In a statement shared on its official social media platforms, the company advised affected customers to download and complete a Prepaid Reallocation Form available through its official channels.
“To reallocate funds or reverse a recent transaction, please download and fill out the Prepaid Reallocation Form from our website,” Kenya Power stated.
The utility company further explained that customers are required to submit the completed form together with supporting documents, including a copy of their national identification card and proof of transaction, for verification and processing.
Mistaken electricity token purchases have become increasingly common as more Kenyans rely on mobile money services for utility payments. Errors often occur when customers accidentally select the wrong payment option, enter incorrect meter numbers, or complete transactions they did not intend to make.

Consumer complaints involving erroneous token purchases frequently surface on social media, with many users seeking guidance on whether such payments can be reversed or transferred to another meter.
Kenya Power has consistently urged customers to carefully review payment details before authorising transactions, warning that mistakes can lead to delays and inconvenience during the reversal process.
The latest clarification is expected to offer relief to thousands of prepaid electricity users who may find themselves in similar situations and are looking for ways to recover or redirect funds sent in error.
The announcement also comes as Kenya Power continues to enhance its digital payment and customer service systems in a bid to improve efficiency, reduce transaction-related complaints, and strengthen the reliability of its prepaid electricity services.
Customers experiencing challenges with token purchases or meter-related issues have been encouraged to contact Kenya Power through its official customer care channels for assistance.
