Kenya Railways to Launch Mombasa Commuter Rail Service from SGR Terminus
The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has announced that the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service will start operations on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. President William Ruto will officially launch the project which will ease the 14km journey from Mombasa SGR terminus to the Central Business District (CBD).
According to KRC, the new service will offer a faster, more convenient and affordable option for thousands of passengers arriving in Miritini on the Madaraka Express from Nairobi. The initiative introduces “Park and Ride” and “Drop and Ride” systems to make city access smoother for locals and visitors.
The commuter train will run on a modernized metre-gauge railway line and will stop at Miritini, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Shimanzi, Mazeras before terminating at Mombasa CBD.
During an inspection tour on September 5, 2025, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the government is committed to improving urban mobility. “Upon commencement of operations, the service is expected to carry about 4,000 commuters daily,” Chirchir said.
The Ksh.4.2 billion project was completed in August 2025 and includes major infrastructure upgrades. It has new passenger stations at Miritini and Mombasa town, 16.6km of metre-gauge track rehabilitation and 2.3km railway bridge across the Makupa Causeway.
This is similar to the Nairobi Commuter Rail service which has been operational since the inception of the SGR. In Nairobi, the system connects Syokimau, Imara Daima, Makadara and Nairobi CBD and eases travel for thousands daily.
Transport experts say the Mombasa service will not only reduce travel time but also decongest city roads and improve connectivity for business and tourism. With this, Mombasa joins Nairobi in having modern commuter rail solutions, Kenya is now committed to efficient public transport systems.
