KFS Deploys Drones in Karura Forest After Python Sighting Raises Safety Concerns

Just days after a python was spotted in Karura Forest, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has introduced drone patrols to boost security in the area.

The forest, one of Nairobi’s most beloved urban green spaces, has been facing safety concerns after a python was seen on the walking trails. KFS has deployed the drone unit under the Security and Protection Directorate to conduct regular aerial surveillance to supplement the ground patrols.

“The drone unit from the Security and Protection Directorate is now conducting regular patrols throughout the forest,” the service said in a statement.

The high-tech patrols will help monitor the vast forest and give visitors more confidence to cycle, walk and picnic. According to KFS, this is part of its commitment to keep Karura safe and accessible to all Nairobians and visitors.

Python Sighting Fears

This comes after concerns rose after a python was spotted in the forest earlier this month. On September 5, KFS acknowledged receiving reports of the snake and issued guidelines to the public.

“In case of any sighting, report to KFS Forest Rangers at the various gates,” the service advised.

KFS asked pet owners to keep their animals on a leash, restricted to designated tracks and visitors to walk or jog along marked paths. The circulated photo of the python has not been authenticated but similar sightings were reported in 2019 and 2022.

Working with Agencies

As concerns persist, KFS will continue to work with other government agencies to find solutions to the risks in the forest.

“Visitors with pets should consider keeping them on a leash along the designated tracks only,” the service said, while assuring Kenyans that safety is top priority.

This comes as debates continue over the forest’s management after KFS took over from the Community Forest Association (CFA) which had been managing the forest for years.

Despite this, KFS is inviting Nairobians to continue enjoying Karura Forest’s peaceful environment while exercising caution and reporting any unusual sightings.
