Kitengela Rally Violence: One Dead After Disruption of Sifuna-Led Gathering
Politics in Kitengela took a dark turn on Sunday. What was meant to be another charged rally quickly spiraled into chaos — and by the end of it, one family was mourning.
A Life Lost Amid Rally Chaos
Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi Senator, confirmed on Monday that a 28-year-old man, Vincent Ayomo, lost his life during the disruption of a political rally he was leading in Kitengela, Kajiado County on February 15, 2026.
According to Sifuna, Ayomo was fatally shot when police officers moved in to break up the gathering.
The senator didn’t hold back. His words carried both grief and anger.
“He tragically lost his life in the fight for a better Kenya at the hands of those who are duty-bound to protect him. He came to join other Kenyans in a peaceful assembly. He committed no crime. He provoked nobody. So why did the police kill him?” he posed.
You can almost hear the frustration in that question. It wasn’t just political rhetoric. It felt personal.
Blame Directed at State Leadership
Sifuna squarely pointed fingers at President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing them of orchestrating what he described as a violent crackdown.
He alleged that police were deployed alongside hired goons to destabilize the meeting. According to him, dozens were injured as officers lobbed teargas to scatter the large crowd. Property, too, wasn’t spared.
“They do not respect the rights of Kenyans and are intolerant of democratic competition. They have chosen to unleash state violence on Kenyans instead of addressing the many challenges facing them,” he said.
Then came a warning — or maybe a promise.
“They wrongly believe that the use of state violence will deter Kenyans from exercising their political rights. To the contrary, Kenyans will not surrender and live on their knees. Instead, they will defend their rights and use their votes to effect change through the ballot.”
Strong words. And clearly, this isn’t ending anytime soon.
Legal Action Looming
Sifuna vowed to pursue justice for the slain man and his family. He insisted that those responsible must face the law.
“We will pursue justice for his family and ensure that those responsible for his death are held accountable. We wish the injured quick relief and speedy recovery,” he said.
It’s a familiar pattern in Kenya’s heated political landscape — rallies, disruption, accusations, denials. But when someone dies, it stops being just politics. It becomes painfully human.
ODM Rivalry Adds Another Layer
The rally was attended by prominent figures including Babu Owino, James Orengo and Godfrey Osotsi.
It was organized under a rival faction of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), a party currently grappling with internal divisions.
The fallout began when the Oburu Odinga-led faction removed Sifuna from his position as Secretary General. But Sifuna has consistently rejected that move, insisting he remains the legitimately elected SG. He has previously termed the ouster a political witch hunt tied to his refusal to back President Ruto’s re-election ambitions.
So yes, this rally wasn’t happening in a vacuum. It came against the backdrop of party wrangles, shifting alliances, and rising political temperatures.
What Happens Next?
That’s the question hanging in the air.
Will there be investigations? Accountability? Or will this join the long list of politically charged confrontations that fade with time?
For Vincent Ayomo’s family, the politics won’t matter much tonight. What will matter is that a 28-year-old man left home and didn’t return.
And that’s where the story really hits.
