LIVE UPDATES: Ol Kalou By-Election Gets Underway as Political Rivals Fight for Strategic Seat

LIVE BLOG: Ol Kalou By-Election โ€” Mt Kenya Faces Major Political Test as Ruto and Gachagua Camps Battle for Crucial Seat

The people of Ol Kalou are heading to the polls today in one of Kenya’s most politically significant by-elections, with the outcome expected to send an early signal ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The contest has attracted national attention, with political analysts describing it as the first major electoral showdown between President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration and the opposition alliance associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the Mt Kenya region.

The parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho on March 29, triggering a fiercely contested race that has drawn intense campaigning from both sides in the final weeks.

Follow our live updates below as voting unfolds across the constituency.

LIVE: Voting Begins Across 144 Polling Stations

Voting officially commenced at 6:00am after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) opened all 144 polling stations spread across the five wards of Ol Kalou Constituency.

A total of 73,480 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in an election that could reshape the political landscape in Nyandarua County.

The polling stations are distributed as follows:

  • Rurii Ward โ€“ 33 polling stations
  • Kanjuiri Ridge Ward โ€“ 32 polling stations
  • Karau Ward โ€“ 27 polling stations
  • Kaimbaga Ward โ€“ 27 polling stations
  • Mirangine Ward โ€“ 25 polling stations

The constituency tallying process will be conducted at Ol Kalou Secondary School Hall, where results from all polling stations will be received, verified and announced.

Among the busiest voting centres is A.C. Ol Kalou Primary School in Karau Ward, which has seven voting streams serving more than 4,700 registered voters.

Early morning queues began forming shortly after polling stations opened, with election officials reporting a steady flow of voters. Initial observations suggest turnout could surpass that recorded in several recent parliamentary by-elections, although official turnout figures are yet to be released.

UDA Candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah Casts Vote, Expresses Confidence

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah has cast his ballot at Huruma Primary School, saying he remains optimistic about his chances while pledging to respect the will of voters.

Speaking to journalists after voting, Nyagah praised residents for turning out in large numbers to participate in the democratic process.

“It is really encouraging to see how people have come out to vote and exercise their democratic right,” he said.

The UDA candidate expressed confidence that he would emerge victorious but maintained that he would accept the final outcome announced by the IEBC.

Nyagah also alleged that there were reports of cash being distributed near some polling stations, urging electoral authorities and security agencies to investigate any claims of voter bribery and ensure the election remains free, fair and credible.

Election officials had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.

Why This By-Election Matters

Although only one parliamentary seat is at stake, today’s vote carries national political significance.

The Ol Kalou by-election is widely viewed as a key measure of political influence in the Mt Kenya region following months of heightened political realignments.

Both the Kenya Kwanza administration and opposition leaders have invested heavily in the campaign, making the result an important indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Counting is expected to begin immediately after polls close, with official results anticipated later tonight.

All Candidates on the Ballot as Ol Kalou Voters Choose New MP

A total of nine candidates were cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

While the ballot features candidates from a broad political spectrum, the contest has largely evolved into a high-stakes showdown between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), which has emerged as a significant political force in the Mt Kenya region.

Political observers have identified Samuel Muchina Nyagah (UDA) and Sammy Kamau Ngotho (DCP) as the frontrunners in a race widely viewed as a barometer of the shifting political dynamics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

However, several other candidates are also seeking to upset the favourites and secure the parliamentary seat left vacant following the death of former MP David Kiaraho.
