Lulu Hassan Responds to Viral Billboard, Addresses Claims of Mvita MP Ambition

Renowned Kenyan news anchor Lulu Hassan has dismissed widespread speculation suggesting she plans to enter politics ahead of the 2027 General Election, following the circulation of a viral billboard bearing her image.

The Citizen TV presenter found herself at the centre of online chatter this week after a photo of a billboard appearing to promote her alleged bid for the Mvita parliamentary seat began circulating on social media. The billboard, mounted on a streetlight post, featured Lulu’s portrait alongside the words “Mama Mvita” — a slogan commonly used in political campaigns to project a sense of community and maternal leadership.

The poster’s dominant orange colour further fuelled assumptions that Lulu could be aligning with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), a major political party in Kenya whose signature colour is orange.

The speculation gained renewed traction on Tuesday, November 11, after businessman and politician Alinur Mohamed shared the image on X (formerly Twitter), hinting that Lulu might be gearing up for a parliamentary run.

“It looks like Lulu Hassan might be vying with ODM Party for the MP position in Mvita constituency. Notice the colours,” Alinur wrote, sparking a wave of online discussion.

However, Lulu has since broken her silence on the matter, firmly denying any involvement in politics or links to the billboard. In a brief clarification shared through her verified social media pages, the journalist described the rumours as “completely unfounded” and urged her followers not to believe misleading online content.

“I am not running for any political seat. I have not commissioned or authorised any billboard or campaign materials bearing my name or image. My focus remains entirely on journalism and storytelling,” Lulu clarified.

This is not the first time the award-winning news anchor’s name has been associated with politics. Earlier in May, T-shirts emblazoned with her image and the same “Mama Mvita” slogan began circulating online, reigniting speculation that she might be considering a political future. The shirts, featuring her signature smile and the phrase printed boldly across the front, were reportedly seen in Mombasa County.

Political analysts note that branding slogans such as “Mama Mvita” are often employed by female politicians to build emotional connections with local voters. Figures like Charity Ngilu and the late Orie Rogo Manduli famously used similar monikers to strengthen their grassroots appeal.

Yet, despite the recurring rumours, Lulu has maintained a clear distinction between her professional career and politics. She continues to co-anchor Citizen Nipashe Weekend alongside her husband Rashid Abdalla — a show widely admired for its chemistry and family-friendly approach to storytelling.

With the 2027 elections still two years away, observers say such premature speculation is likely to intensify as the political landscape begins to take shape. For now, however, Lulu Hassan has made it clear: her ambitions remain firmly within Kenya’s media industry.
