Man Collapses and Dies Inside Bungoma Law Courts Compound

An old man who had appeared before the Environment and Lands Court in Bungoma died inside the court premises on Tuesday morning, the Judiciary has confirmed.

According to Judiciary Spokesperson Paul Ndemo, the man arrived at the court compound at 9 am looking weak and was brought in on a motorcycle. A customer care officer issued him a Priority Card—a document for the elderly, pregnant or sick to get faster service at the courts.

After getting the card, the man told court staff he would wait for his lawyer and decided to rest on the grass outside with his brothers. But when a court official went to update him on his case, he was found unconscious.

“Efforts to revive him failed and officers were called to the scene,” Ndemo said. Police arrived shortly and confirmed he was dead. His body was later taken to Bungoma County Referral Hospital Mortuary after the scene was processed.

The court and the public are in shock.

This is not the first unusual incident to happen at Bungoma Law Courts in recent weeks. Three weeks ago, a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer’s gun accidentally discharged during a court session and injured two officers and three civilians.

Ndemo confirmed the incident which happened on September 16 injured the five, all of whom were treated at Bungoma Referral Hospital. No one died and court proceedings were suspended as investigations were launched.

The Judiciary has since assured the public of continued safety measures in all its facilities, saying the recent incidents are isolated and under investigation.
