Maraga Blasts Ruto Over Koimburi Abduction: ‘Did He Lie to Kenyans?’

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has issued a scathing condemnation of the alleged abduction and poisoning of Juja MP George Koimburi, accusing the government of failing to uphold the rule of law and human rights. In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, May 26, Maraga challenged President William Ruto’s recent assurances against abductions, calling them into serious question.

Maraga’s remarks follow the shocking discovery of MP Koimburi unconscious on a coffee farm in Githunguri constituency, barely a day after he was allegedly abducted from a church service. The former CJ labeled the incident “reprehensible” and demanded accountability from those in power.

“Reports that Hon. George Koimburi, Member of Parliament for Juja, has been found unconscious at a farm near Kibichoi in Githunguri constituency, are reprehensible. This is a day after he was abducted from a church service,” said Maraga.

Maraga pointedly referenced President Ruto’s public promise—made during a joint press event with the President of Finland—that his administration would end abductions. “Kenyans will recall that President Ruto, when hosting the President of Finland, assured Kenyans that abductions will end. Was that a confirmation that state agencies are involved? Did he lie about ending abductions?” he posed.

The former head of the judiciary urged national reflection, warning that Kenya risks descending into lawlessness if leaders continue to disregard constitutional principles and human dignity.

“We cannot continue to be a country governed by leaders who have no regard for the rule of law and human life. We must reset Kenya to accountability and constitutionalism. We must restore human dignity and value for human life,” Maraga asserted.

Maraga’s intervention adds a powerful voice to the growing public outcry over the treatment of opposition figures and alleged state involvement in politically motivated violence. As calls for transparency intensify, pressure mounts on the Ruto administration to provide answers—and concrete action—in response to the disturbing incident involving MP Koimburi.
