Matiang’i Dismisses Claims of Secret Political Talks After Viral JKIA Photo Sparks 2027 Alliance Speculation
Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Fred Matiang’i has dismissed widespread speculation that his encounter with Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Kisii Governor Simba Arati at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was part of a secret political meeting aimed at shaping alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The former Interior Cabinet Secretary issued a statement on Saturday, July 4, clarifying that the meeting was purely coincidental after a photograph showing the three leaders together at the airport circulated widely on social media, triggering intense debate over possible political realignments.
According to Matiang’i, the encounter occurred after all three leaders had independently checked in for their respective flights.
“This morning, after checking in at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, I bumped into Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, who had also checked in and were travelling to Kisumu,” Matiang’i said.
The Jubilee presidential candidate insisted there had been no prior arrangement or private discussions between the three leaders, dismissing online claims that they had met the previous night to negotiate political deals.
“Contrary to false claims circulating online, this was neither a meeting held last night nor a planned engagement. It was simply a chance encounter between leaders at the airport,” he added.

Matiang’i further disclosed that upon arriving in Kisumu, he proceeded to Ahero, where he joined Siaya Governor James Orengo, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua and other faithful during a church service.
His clarification followed the rapid spread of photographs showing the three politicians standing together inside the JKIA check-in area before engaging in what appeared to be a brief conversation. The images quickly fuelled speculation that discussions were underway regarding possible political cooperation as the race towards the 2027 General Election gathers momentum.
The photographs ignited widespread discussion across social media platforms, with users offering differing interpretations of the airport encounter.
One social media user questioned whether the leaders had been negotiating future political alliances, asking: “Politically speaking, if Fred Matiang’i, Junet Mohamed and Simba Arati were discussing politics, who was trying to convince who?”
Another user alleged, without providing evidence, that Junet Mohamed and Governor Arati were attempting to persuade Matiang’i to work with the government following recent political developments in the Gusii region.
However, no evidence has emerged to support claims that any formal political negotiations took place, and Matiang’i’s office has maintained that the airport interaction was entirely accidental.
The incident comes at a politically significant moment for Matiang’i, who has increasingly emerged as one of the opposition’s leading figures after being endorsed by the Jubilee Party as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.

With political alignments expected to intensify over the coming months, even brief public encounters between senior political figures continue to attract heightened public scrutiny, reflecting growing interest in the alliances that could shape Kenya’s next presidential contest.
