Matiang’i Breaks Silence on High-Stakes Meeting With Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Team as Opposition Plans Intensify Ahead of 2027
Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Fred Matiang’i has revealed details of a high-level strategy meeting with leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement, signalling growing coordination among opposition figures as preparations for the 2027 General Election gather pace.
The closed-door meeting, held at Matiang’i’s Karen office in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 22, brought together members of the movement led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, just days before the coalition embarks on a major political tour of Western Kenya.
Sharing details after the meeting, Matiang’i described the discussions as “productive” and said they focused on strengthening cooperation between the Linda Mwananchi movement and the United Alternative Government, an emerging opposition alliance seeking to present itself as an alternative to President William Ruto’s administration.
“This morning, I held a productive consultative meeting with the Linda Mwananchi team, led by Nairobi Senator Hon. Edwin Sifuna, at my office in Karen ahead of the team’s tour of Western Kenya,” Matiang’i posted on X.
Opposition Tightens Strategy Ahead of 2027
According to Matiang’i, the meeting centred on harmonising political strategy and ensuring the opposition speaks with one voice as the country moves closer to the next General Election.
“Our discussions focused on strengthening strategic coordination across the United Alternative Government and aligning our efforts as we continue to offer Kenyans a credible, principled, and people-centred alternative ahead of the 2027 General Election,” he said.
He added that consultations between the various opposition formations would continue in the coming months.
“We remain committed to regular consultations and purposeful engagement as we work together to restore accountable leadership, uphold constitutional governance, and put our country firmly back on the path of national renewal,” Matiang’i stated.
The meeting is being viewed as another indication that opposition leaders are accelerating efforts to build a united political front capable of challenging President William Ruto in the next election.
Western Kenya Tour
The strategy meeting comes ahead of Linda Mwananchi’s highly anticipated Western Kenya mobilisation campaign.
The movement is scheduled to hold a rally in Trans Nzoia County on Saturday, July 25, before proceeding to Bungoma County on Sunday, July 26.
Senator Sifuna has branded the two back-to-back political events a “double header,” urging supporters to turn out in large numbers as the movement expands its grassroots campaign.
Political observers say the Western Kenya tour is expected to test the movement’s growing influence in a region regarded as strategically important ahead of the 2027 race.
Part of Growing Opposition Consultations
Wednesday’s meeting is the latest in a series of consultations involving Matiang’i and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement.
In recent months, opposition figures have increased consultations aimed at consolidating support, coordinating messaging, and building a broader alliance around governance reforms, constitutionalism, and accountability.
The engagements have fuelled speculation that Kenya’s opposition is laying the groundwork for a united campaign well before official election campaigns begin.
Pauline Njoroge’s Exit Adds to Momentum
The meeting also came barely a day after political communications strategist Pauline Njoroge formally resigned from the Jubilee Party to dedicate her efforts to the Linda Mwananchi movement.
Njoroge stepped down as Jubilee’s Deputy Organising Secretary, relinquished her position in the party’s National Executive Committee, and ended her membership after a political journey spanning 14 years.
Reflecting on her decision, she said:
“Since February this year, I have had the privilege of being part of the Linda Mwananchi movement.”
She described the movement as one committed to promoting good governance, constitutionalism, accountability, and servant leadership.
Jubilee Party acknowledged her resignation and thanked her for her contribution over the years.
With senior opposition leaders holding regular consultations, prominent political figures joining the movement, and nationwide mobilisation gathering momentum, Wednesday’s Karen meeting is likely to reinforce perceptions that Kenya’s opposition is intensifying preparations for what could become a fiercely contested 2027 General Election.
