Mbeere North By-Election Drama: Justin Muturi Ejects Leonard Wa Muthende’s Agent Over Yellow Attire

Tensions flared at the Siakago polling centre on Thursday, November 27, 2025, when Democratic Party (DP) leader and former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, together with representatives of DP parliamentary candidate Newton Karish, removed an agent of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate from the premises.

The incident occurred after the agent, identified as Chinga Ward MCA Kiruga Thuku, arrived at the polling station wearing yellow, the official colour of the UDA party. Muturi confirmed the agent was asked to leave, citing electoral laws prohibiting party colours at polling stations.

“We have told him you cannot come to the polling area when you are donning party colours. If he is an authorised agent or even an observer, he must come wearing other kinds of clothes, not come wearing party colours,” Muturi said. “The person is Chinga Ward MCA Kiruga Thuku.”

The dispute at Siakago is the latest development in the highly charged Mbeere North parliamentary by-election, where allegations of electoral malpractice have already raised concerns among candidates.

Muturi had earlier raised alarms about a surge of vehicles with unmarked number plates moving through the constituency on the eve of the by-election. Speaking in Siakago, which also serves as the Mbeere North tallying centre, on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, he warned that the vehicles were carrying unidentified individuals not known to local residents.

“Hotels in Embu Town and Mbeere North are full of unidentified people, allegedly brought in by politicians aligned to the state,” Muturi stated. “There is an unusual number of unmarked cars and vehicles without registration numbers crisscrossing the entire constituency, and they are carrying people unknown to residents in Mbeere North.”

The DP leader also criticised the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for what he described as a failure to address these security and electoral integrity concerns. He specifically condemned the commission’s decision to deploy plainclothes police officers at tallying centres, arguing that ordinary citizens could not distinguish them from hired goons or individuals who might attempt to influence the election outcome.

Muturi assured that DP supporters would remain peaceful during the voting process but warned that any attempt to provoke violence by opponents would be met with resistance.

The Mbeere North parliamentary by-election, closely watched across Embu County, has become a flashpoint for allegations of political intimidation and irregularities, underscoring the high stakes for the major parties involved.
