Mike Sonko Breaks Silence After Viral Claims He Was Involved in G-Wagon Road Accident
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has dismissed viral social media claims alleging that he was involved in a serious road accident along one of Kenya’s major highways.
The claims, which circulated widely online on Thursday, December 18, alleged that Sonko had been involved in a crash while driving his reportedly KSh40 million Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. Accompanying the claims was an image showing an overturned Mercedes G-Wagon with a shattered windscreen, prompting concern and speculation among members of the public.
However, Sonko has strongly denied the reports, branding them as false and misleading propaganda.
In a brief statement issued on Friday morning, the former Nairobi County boss clarified that he was safe and in good health, stressing that no such incident had taken place.
“I have noted fake propaganda being circulated claiming that one of my Mercedes G-Wagons was involved in a rollover accident,” Sonko said.
He added:
“Let me categorically state that this information is false. I am very safe, well, and in good health. No such incident occurred.”
Sonko went on to urge Kenyans to disregard unverified reports circulating online and warned those responsible for spreading the misinformation to desist.
“I urge the public to ignore misinformation and rely only on verified facts. Those spreading falsehoods should desist,” he said.
“Thank you to everyone who reached out with concern and goodwill.”
The rumours emerged at a particularly sensitive time, as the country continues to mourn the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, who died following a road accident earlier this month.
A spot check by Flashnews.co.ke established that some online users allegedly attempted to link Sonko to Jirongo’s fatal crash by circulating misleading images of a Mercedes G-Wagon, falsely suggesting a connection between the two incidents.
Jirongo died on December 13 after a head-on collision involving his vehicle and a bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, with investigations still ongoing to establish the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
The confusion has been compounded by a recent separate online hoax involving a popular public service vehicle (PSV) known as Mood, which is affiliated with President William Ruto’s son. Fake images circulated online claimed the vehicle had been involved in an accident, reports that were later dismissed by an insider.
Authorities and public figures have repeatedly cautioned Kenyans against the spread of unverified information online, warning that such misinformation can cause unnecessary panic and distress.
Investigations into Jirongo’s death remain ongoing, with police expected to release further details once inquiries are complete.
