Millions of Learners Set to Return as Schools Reopen in January 2026
As the festive season winds down, schools across the country are preparing to welcome millions of learners back to classrooms for the first term of the 2026 academic year. The new term marks the end of the extended December holidays, which saw families enjoy travel, reunions, and vacation activities.
According to the Ministry of Education’s official academic calendar, the majority of pre-primary, primary, junior secondary, senior secondary, and tertiary institutions will reopen before January 10, with most schools expected to resume classes on January 5, 2026.
The first term will run for 13 weeks, concluding on April 2, 2026, followed by a short three-week April holiday. Classes are scheduled to resume for the second term on April 27, 2026. The calendar also includes a half-term break from February 25 to March 1, providing students and teachers a five-day pause before continuing the term.

Education experts note that the reopening period is a busy time not only for learners but also for parents and guardians, who spend the holidays preparing uniforms, textbooks, and other school essentials. The Ministry emphasised the importance of planning ahead to ensure a smooth start to the academic year.
This year is particularly significant as it marks the transition of the pioneer cohort of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system into junior secondary schools. According to the Ministry, the first group of Grade 10 learners is expected to report to their institutions by January 12, 2026.
Speaking on the preparations, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed that a total of 1,130,459 learners sat for the examinations, including 578,630 boys and 551,829 girls.
“All schools, both public and private, shall admit Grade 10 learners through KEMIS. No principal shall enter a learner into KEMIS before he or she reports to the school physically. Daily online reporting will be monitored through KEMIS,” a ministry guideline stated.
As learners return to school, authorities urge parents, guardians, and students to familiarise themselves with the academic calendar to ensure a smooth start to the year.
