A former employee of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has been arraigned at the Kakamega Anti-Corruption Court after allegedly using forged academic certificates to secure employment at the institution and unlawfully earn more than Ksh7.5 million in salaries and benefits.

According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, investigations established that the suspect allegedly falsified several academic documents, including a Diploma certificate in Community Health Nursing purportedly from Kenya Medical Training College, a Nursing Certificate from the Nursing Council, and a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate allegedly issued by Matende Secondary School.
In a statement, the anti-graft agency said the accused used the forged credentials to obtain employment as a nurse at MMUST, where she is alleged to have worked between 2015 and 2023.
“A former employee of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has been charged before the Kakamega Anti-Corruption Court for allegedly forging academic certificates and using them to secure employment at the institution,” the commission stated.
Court documents seen by local media indicate that the suspect was arrested and presented before the Kakamega Law Courts on May 12, 2026, where she faced multiple charges, including forgery, uttering false documents, deceiving a principal and fraudulent acquisition of public property.
The prosecution alleges that the suspect fraudulently received Ksh7,584,574 in salaries and allowances during her tenure at the institution.
Part of the charge sheet reads: “Between 1st January 2015 and 31st May 2023, within the Republic of Kenya, being a public officer employed by Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology as a Nurse, you fraudulently acquired public property, to wit, Ksh7,584,574, being salary paid after securing employment using forged academic documents.”

Following the completion of investigations, the EACC forwarded the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which approved criminal charges against the suspect.
The accused denied all charges before the court and was released on a cash bail of Ksh500,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh1 million with a surety of a similar amount pending the hearing and determination of the case.
The matter is scheduled to be mentioned on May 28, 2026, for pre-trial directions and the setting of hearing dates as prosecutors prepare to present evidence before the Kakamega Anti-Corruption Court.
The case emerges amid heightened scrutiny facing MMUST after the Ministry of Education recently flagged the university over alleged irregularities involving questionable academic programmes. In a directive issued on April 1, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba ordered investigations into several courses offered at the institution.
The prosecution also comes at a time when the EACC has intensified its nationwide crackdown on fake academic qualifications in public institutions. On the same day, the commission announced the arrest of two officials from the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company and another official from Kaimosi Friends University over similar allegations involving forged certificates.
