Mugithi Star Waithaka Wa Jane Claims Life in Danger Amid Fallout Over Artists’ Visit to Deputy President

Prominent Mugithi singer Waithaka Wa Jane has sparked alarm among fans and the wider public after alleging that his life is in danger due to a planned abduction during an upcoming live performance. The claims have drawn national attention, especially given rising tensions within the Mugithi music scene, which has recently become entangled with political interests.

In a statement posted on his social media platforms in the early hours of Thursday, Waithaka claimed he had received credible information that an unknown party was planning to abduct him during a performance scheduled for the same night at OJ Bypass in Membley, Kiambu County.

“Someone is planning to abduct me when performing tonight at OJ bypass Membley. Their aim is to either silence me or even end my life!” the singer wrote.

While Waithaka did not disclose how he came by this information or whether law enforcement had been notified, the post triggered an outpouring of concern from fans, fellow artists, and industry stakeholders. The lack of specifics surrounding the threat has led to widespread speculation, with many urging authorities to investigate the matter promptly.

The allegations come at a time of heightened scrutiny within the Mount Kenya music industry, following a controversial meeting between several well-known Mugithi artists and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. The meeting, held earlier this week at the deputy president’s official residence, included artists such as Samidoh Muchoki, Karangu Muraya, Ben Githae, Jose Gatutura, DJ Fatxo, and Ngaruiya Junior.

Waithaka was notably absent from the delegation, fueling speculation that his exclusion may be related to his recent concerns. Fans of the genre have expressed mixed reactions to the artists’ visit, with some praising the initiative to seek government support, while others viewed it as a politically motivated move that could compromise artistic independence.

Defending the meeting, Deputy President Kindiki stated that the artists had approached him to request government intervention in dismantling cartels that exploit musicians within the industry. “The government is committed to ensuring a fair and supportive environment for our creative sector,” Kindiki said in a press release. “We are engaging all stakeholders to bring lasting reform.”

Waithaka’s security concerns have added a new layer to the ongoing debate about political interference in the arts. While there is no direct evidence linking the alleged abduction threat to the artists’ meeting with Kindiki, the timing and context of Waithaka’s message have intensified public interest.

Adding to the controversy, Waithaka’s partner, media personality Muthoni Wa Kirumba, has been involved in a public online dispute with Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina. Though unrelated to the kidnapping claims, the feud has kept the singer in the media spotlight and may have further exposed him to potential risks.

Security agencies have not yet released an official statement in response to Waithaka’s claims. However, human rights groups and music industry organizations have called for immediate investigations to ensure the singer’s safety and uncover any credible threats.

“We urge the National Police Service to treat these allegations with the seriousness they deserve,” said a representative from the Kenya Creative Artists Union. “No artist should live in fear for expressing themselves or performing their craft.”

As the situation continues to develop, fans have flooded Waithaka’s social media pages with messages of support, urging him to take necessary precautions and avoid the performance venue if needed.

Whether or not the alleged plot materializes, the episode underscores growing unease within Kenya’s creative industry, where artists often navigate the delicate balance between artistic expression and political influence.
