Senior Police Officer Killed, MCA Injured in Horror Nine-Vehicle Pile-Up on Nairobi-Nakuru Highway
A senior police officer has been killed and a Member of County Assembly injured following a devastating nine-vehicle collision along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

Nyandarua County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) John Rioba died at the scene after a truck reportedly lost its brakes and ploughed into several vehicles at Karai on Monday, June 15, triggering a chain-reaction crash that left multiple people injured and brought traffic to a standstill.
The accident also left Uasin Gishu MCA Regina Chumba nursing injuries. She was rushed to hospital for treatment after reportedly sustaining chest injuries during the collision. Her condition had not been officially disclosed by the time of publication.
Witnesses said the truck, which was travelling towards Nakuru, appeared to suffer brake failure before the driver lost control and rammed into several vehicles on the highway.
“The lorry was moving at high speed before it suddenly veered into other vehicles. People were screaming and trying to escape as the crash unfolded,” one witness told local media.
The impact sparked a massive pile-up involving nine vehicles, leaving twisted wreckage scattered across the road and trapping some occupants inside damaged vehicles.
Emergency responders, police officers and members of the public rushed to the scene to rescue victims and clear the wreckage as traffic stretched for kilometres along the highway.
Images shared widely on social media showed the scale of the destruction, with several vehicles extensively damaged and emergency teams working frantically to assist survivors.
Authorities have since launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash, although preliminary reports point to mechanical failure involving the truck.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over road safety on Kenya’s major highways, particularly involving heavy commercial vehicles.
The Karai accident comes amid a worrying rise in fatal road crashes across the country.
Just a week earlier, eight people were killed and 27 others seriously injured in a grisly accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway involving a truck, a bus, two saloon cars and a motorcycle. According to police, the victims died on the spot while the injured were rushed to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

The latest crash also occurred only six days after another deadly collision along the Webuye-Bungoma Highway claimed at least five lives. In that incident, a trailer reportedly lost control and crashed into a 14-seater matatu at Makotelo in Mabanga, leaving several passengers seriously injured.
Road safety experts have repeatedly called for stricter inspection of commercial vehicles and tougher enforcement of traffic regulations, warning that mechanical failures and reckless driving continue to contribute significantly to fatal accidents on Kenyan roads.
As investigations continue, family, friends and colleagues of the late CCIO John Rioba have been left mourning the sudden loss of a senior officer whose death has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community.
