Oburu Odinga Dismisses Claims of Sifuna’s Removal as ODM Secretary General
NAIROBI, Oct 28 — Acting Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Odinga has dismissed reports that Secretary General Edwin Sifuna is being removed from his post.
Oburu said Sifuna remains a key member of the party as it reorganises following the death of Raila Odinga.
“I have spoken to Sifuna, and he has no problem,” Oburu told reporters on Tuesday. “He read out the resolutions of our meeting. He is with us and will stay with us.”
The Siaya Senator acknowledged Sifuna’s outspoken nature, particularly in his criticism of the broad-based government that ODM joined with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), but said his conduct did not warrant disciplinary action.
“As a young person, sometimes he can go a little overboard, but there is nothing he has done to justify removal,” Oburu said. “If he goes astray, we may discipline him within the party.”
Calls for Sifuna’s ouster have come from a section of ODM members in Luo Nyanza, who describe him as divisive. The criticism intensified after Raila’s death, which Sifuna has said occurred as he continued to act with Raila’s blessing.
Sifuna has also maintained that one of Raila’s final wishes was for ODM to field a candidate in the 2027 general election.
Earlier Tuesday, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, an ally of President Ruto, expressed support for Sifuna after he affirmed ODM’s participation in the unity government until 2027.
“Well done, Sifuna,” Cherargei said. “Your position as Secretary General is secure.”
