James Orengo breaks silence on ODM future as 2027 looms — ‘Party must choose people over status quo’
Siaya Governor James Orengo has issued a firm statement on the future direction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), insisting the party must remain united and rooted in a pro-people agenda as political temperatures begin to rise ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview with K24 TV on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Orengo reaffirmed his loyalty to ODM while cautioning against internal divisions that could weaken the party’s influence on the national stage.
The veteran politician emphasised that the immediate priority for the party’s leadership is to safeguard its unity, warning that fragmentation could derail its long-standing political agenda.
“For now, our commitment is to make sure that ODM is one party and it is driven by a pro-people agenda, not support for status quo,” Orengo stated.

His remarks come at a time when Kenya’s political landscape is gradually shifting, with parties beginning to recalibrate strategies ahead of the next electoral cycle. ODM, one of the country’s most influential opposition parties, has in recent months faced growing pressure to redefine its identity and solidify its position amid emerging alliances and internal debates.
Orengo, a long-serving ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga, underscored that the party’s survival and relevance will depend on its ability to champion the interests of ordinary citizens rather than aligning with entrenched political systems.

Political analysts interpret Orengo’s comments as a subtle but significant signal to party insiders, urging them to prioritise unity and ideological clarity over factional interests as the race to 2027 slowly gathers momentum.
