Otieno Kajwang’s Widow Rose Otieno Succumbs After Long Battle With Cancer

Rose Otieno – the widow of Homa Bay senator Otieno Kajwang’ – has lost her long fight against illness. The news came on Thursday October 30, with close family sources confirming that she had died after a long and tough battle with cancer which had actually gone into remission at one stage.

You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who didn’t rate Rose highly – a respected academic, she spent years as a lecturer at Kenyatta University, where she also held the pretty important role of head of their alumni association.

A mum of two, Rose won the hearts of the whole country back in 2014 when she spoke at her husband’s funeral.

She gave a truly moving tribute that summed up their time together with what felt like the whole of Kenyata Theatre in tears – it was an especially beautiful speech because it was so full of love and warmth. She talked about meeting her husband on a bus in Nairobi’s Buruburu estate some while ago.

Rose told the story of how they first met with a smile – how she and her sister were living in Buruburu at the time, and she was on bus number 58 when a tall man with a great big smile caught her eye. “I just happened to be sitting down and this guy comes over and asks me to move in next to him” – then, just 5 minutes later the bus breaks down. The two of them get stuck on the side of the road, meet a local crusader who sets them on the path to being together. From that point on, its fair to say they were the perfect match – she said of her husband “Gerald was such a funny man” and “I loved my husband, and I still do” – & she expressed the hope that she might see him again in heaven eventually.

The family are still sorting out funeral plans and we expect those to be announced in due course.
