Police Officer Dies After Collapsing During Madaraka Day Celebrations in Wajir

A police officer attached to the Wajir security command has died after collapsing moments after participating in Kenya’s Madaraka Day celebrations, casting a sombre mood over the national holiday commemorations.

The officer, identified as Hassan Juma Moyo, reportedly collapsed shortly after completing the ceremonial march-past at Wajir Stadium on Sunday, June 1, 2026.

According to preliminary reports, Moyo had successfully taken part in the parade alongside fellow security officers before suddenly falling to the ground at approximately 9:05 a.m., in full view of fellow officers, dignitaries, and hundreds of spectators attending the event.

Emergency responders at the venue rushed to his aid before he was transported to Wajir County Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Medical personnel reportedly attempted to resuscitate the officer upon arrival at the facility. However, despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at around 10:00 a.m.

Reports indicate that the cause of death was established as a myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack.

The tragic incident prompted an outpouring of condolences from leaders and residents, particularly in Kwale County, where the officer hailed from.

Kwale Woman Representative Fatuma Masito confirmed the officer’s death through a statement shared on social media.

“It is with great sadness, on behalf of myself, my family, and all the people of Kwale County, that I receive the news of the death of the late Hassan Juma Moyo, a police officer who dedicated himself to serving our nation until his last breath when he suddenly passed away while on duty during the national Madaraka Day celebrations at Wajir Stadium,” she said.

Masito praised the officer’s dedication to public service and extended condolences to his family and colleagues.

“We send our deepest condolences to his family, relatives, friends, colleagues, and all residents of the Golini Lake area, who have lost their beloved and highly respected son,” she added.

As of Monday, the National Police Service (NPS) had not released an official statement regarding the officer’s sudden death.

Concerns Over Welfare of Security Officers

Moyo’s death has renewed discussion about the welfare and health of security personnel deployed during major state functions and national celebrations.

Over the years, several incidents involving officers collapsing while on duty during high-profile events have been recorded across the country.

In December last year, an administrator reportedly collapsed during a graduation ceremony at the Embakasi National Police College attended by President William Ruto.

A similar incident occurred during Madaraka Day celebrations in Kisumu in 2021 when a Kenya Navy officer fainted while participating in the event.

More recently, a sergeant attached to the Presidential Escort Unit died after collapsing at State House Nairobi in April 2025.

In February 2026, investigators also launched inquiries into the sudden death of another police officer stationed at State House in Mombasa.

The latest tragedy is likely to intensify calls for enhanced medical screening, regular health monitoring, and improved welfare programmes for officers tasked with participating in physically demanding national assignments.
