President Samia Suluhu Missing as Deadly Protests Erupt Nationwide
Tanzania was on high alert yesterday as questions mounted over the whereabouts of President Samia Suluhu Hassan as post-election chaos escalated.
Reports had senior government officials in Dodoma hiding from public view as thousands of citizens took to the streets to protest what they called a “shambolic” election process.
For the second day in running the country was under a communications blackout and violent protests were reported in several of Tanzania’s major cities.
Tensions boiled over at the Namanga border crossing yesterday afternoon where Kenyan and Tanzanian youths clashed with Tanzanian police. Witnesses said police responded with live bullets and tear gas after being pelted with stones.
Two people – Kabuli Balayi a Tanzanian and John Kahindi a Kenyan businessman – were shot dead during the confrontation. Their bodies were taken to a nearby mortuary. Two others including a Kenyan police officer were seriously injured.
This is one of the most chaotic periods in Tanzania’s recent history and the government’s silence and the President’s disappearance is causing growing concern. .
