Registrar of Companies Reveal Plans to Shut Down 75 Firms by December
President Ruto’s administration has unveiled another round of corporate closures targeting 75 more companies. This is just a week after 54 were formally dissolved by the government.
Deputy Registrar of Companies, Hiram Gachugi, announced the move in a statement on Friday, September 5. He said the companies will be deleted from the register in the next three months unless objections are raised.
The companies under the axe operate in various sectors including consultancy, construction, management services, stationery, health care. Others provide security solutions, agricultural services, travel logistics, hospitality and even manufacture of alcoholic beverages.
According to a notice in the Kenya Gazette, the registrar has given 90 days for interested parties to file objections and explain why the affected companies should not be deleted.
“The Registrar of Companies gives notice that the names of the companies specified hereunder shall be struck off from the Register of Companies at the end of three months,” Gachugi said.
“Any person may show cause why the companies should not be struck off from the Register,” the notice added.
In a separate development, the registrar has reinstated operations for Chen Lu Construction Company which was struck off in July 2021. The company was restored after a petition by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) which claimed the company still owed millions in unpaid taxes.
This is the second wave of deregistration after last week’s announcement where 54 companies were dissolved. Those companies mostly in medical services, consultancy, agriculture, construction and vehicle assembly were deregistered under the Companies Act leaving hundreds of Kenyans jobless.
This latest move is the government’s continued effort to clean up inactive or non-compliant entities from the register.
