Safaricom to Temporarily Suspend M-Pesa Services for Scheduled Upgrade on September 22

Safaricom will be carrying out a scheduled upgrade on its M-Pesa platform which will result in a service interruption.

The maintenance will take place on Monday, September 22, 2025 between 12:30 am and 3:30 am. All M-Pesa services including money transfers, payments and airtime purchases will be unavailable during this period.

According to the telco the upgrade is designed to improve the platform’s reliability, security and overall performance to deliver “always-on, safe and worry-free” mobile financial services.

“For 18 years M-Pesa has been transforming lives in Kenya, connecting customers to opportunities every day. To support this and meet our promise we will be doing a scheduled system upgrade,” Safaricom said.

The early morning timing was chosen to minimize disruption to customers and we urge you to complete any critical transactions before the outage. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and loyalty.

Since its launch in 2007 M-Pesa has grown to be Africa’s largest mobile money service and has driven financial inclusion across the continent. By 2021 it had raised Kenya’s financial access rate to 83.7% from 26.7% in 2006.

Today the platform has over 70 million users in over 170 countries, generating Sh139.9 billion by 2024. M-Pesa’s ecosystem has over 1 million businesses and agents across Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, DRC, Lesotho, Ghana and Egypt.

The upgrade is a testament to Safaricom’s commitment to maintaining M-Pesa as a global leader in mobile money and digital financial services.
