Samson Cherargei Rules Out William Ruto Picking 2027 Running Mate from ODM
Senator Samson Cherargei has dismissed growing speculation that President William Ruto may consider choosing his 2027 running mate from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), insisting the deputy president’s position will remain firmly within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Ruto could replace Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in an effort to broaden support in future coalition negotiations and strengthen ties with ODM ahead of the next General Election.
However, speaking during a public event in Nandi County on Sunday, November 16, Cherargei categorically rejected claims that the Head of State was preparing to sideline Kindiki. He argued that despite ongoing discussions about a broader power-sharing arrangement in government, certain positions remain off the negotiating table.
“I saw some people arguing that in case there are negotiations in the broad-based government, the deputy president’s post might be up for discussion,” Cherargei said. “But they should not forget that there are two posts we won’t negotiate about in any likely coalition: the president’s and the deputy president’s. I want to tell them to go for any other position, but we won’t compromise on those two in any negotiations.”
The outspoken senator emphasised that UDA’s partnership with ODM—formed under the government’s ongoing political realignments—does not extend to surrendering the deputy presidency. He insisted that the role is effectively settled for 2027 and should not be factored into any coalition bargaining.
Cherargei also reassured Deputy President Kindiki of the party’s support, asserting that Kindiki’s loyalty to President Ruto would be recognised both during the next election and beyond.
“In any negotiations that will build a coalition heading into 2027 and 2032, the deputy president of Ruto will be Professor Kindiki,” he declared. “This will be a thank-you to him for standing with our son Ruto. I want to tell my colleagues in the broad-based government, or any other side, that the two top seats are already gone.”
The senator went further, suggesting Kindiki could be well-positioned to succeed President Ruto in 2032, saying the former Tharaka Nithi senator “has what it takes to lead the country”.
Cherargei’s remarks are the latest sign of UDA leaders seeking to quell rumours of internal shifts amid Kenya’s rapidly evolving political landscape. Whether the president himself will address the speculation remains to be seen.
