Several Students Injured as School Bus Overturns in Embu Horror Crash After Driver Loses Control

Several students from Igumori Secondary School were injured on Wednesday morning after their school bus reportedly lost control and overturned near Karii Market in Mbeere North, Embu County, in a frightening accident that triggered a major rescue operation.

The bus, which was carrying learners to school, is said to have veered off the road before rolling into a nearby valley after the driver allegedly lost control while navigating a wet section of the road.

Witnesses at the scene described moments of panic as the vehicle overturned, leaving students trapped inside the wreckage while residents and emergency responders rushed to assist.

According to preliminary reports from first responders, the accident occurred after the bus skidded on the slippery road surface, causing the driver to lose control.

“The road was wet, and the bus appeared to slide before it overturned. People nearby immediately rushed to help rescue the students,” one witness said.

Several learners sustained injuries ranging from minor cuts and bruises to serious trauma. Rescue teams confirmed that at least five students suffered severe injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.

Images from the scene showed the badly damaged school bus lying on its side beside the road as rescuers worked tirelessly to evacuate injured students and account for all passengers.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of students who were on board at the time of the crash, while police launched investigations to establish the precise cause of the accident.

The incident has renewed concerns over road safety as Kenya continues to record a worrying rise in road crashes involving public service vehicles and school transport.

Deadly Bungoma Crash Claims Five Lives

The Embu accident comes barely hours after another devastating road tragedy claimed at least five lives along the Bungoma-Webuye highway.

Police said the fatal collision occurred at around 12:30 a.m. near Bukembe Bridge when a matatu travelling from Webuye towards Bungoma collided head-on with an oncoming trailer.

Preliminary investigations suggest the trailer may have drifted from its lane before crashing into the matatu in a violent impact that killed five passengers instantly.

Several other passengers suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Bungoma County Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.

Police officers later documented the scene and transferred the bodies of the deceased to the mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.

Following the two accidents, authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly on slippery roads, accident-prone sections, and highways currently undergoing construction.

Investigations into both crashes remain ongoing.
