Shock as Baringo Mortuary Looted by Thieves Days Before Launch
A newly built mortuary in Baringo South has been rendered useless after unknown people broke in and stole vital parts including body trays and electrical wiring.
According to facility officials, the stolen items were crucial in powering the cold storage system of Marigat Sub-county Hospital mortuary.
The incident has sparked outrage and condemnation from local leaders, residents and cultural elders. The facility was the first of its kind in Baringo South and was meant to provide families with a dignified and nearby place to preserve the body.
With a cold room that can accommodate up to eight bodies, the mortuary was to serve Tiaty and greater Marigat communities.
“This room was fully constructed and equipped with a cold room to preserve eight bodies. But just as we were about to launch, a theft occurred. The trays meant to hold bodies were stolen,” said Maganga Musango, the area’s Public Health Officer.
The families of the deceased are now forced to travel to far away facilities in Kabarnet, Eldama Ravine or Nakuru – distances of up to 150km – causing logistical and emotional strain.
Police have started investigating the theft which many believe is linked to the increasing demand for scrap metal. In response, community elders have called for a total ban on scrap metal business in Baringo, blaming it for the vandalism of public facilities.
“This mortuary was meant to ease our suffering not add to it. We want the government to act before we lose more public amenities,” said one elder.
Assistant County Commissioner Fredrick Okoth condemned the act saying the government will not take it lightly.
“We can’t continue begging those who destroy public infrastructure instead of protecting it. The government will not allow this to continue,” he said.
