Speculation Over Raila’s Health Grows as ODM Leader Skips Key Events

Raila Odinga has been off the public stage for almost two weeks and the speculation about his health is getting louder despite his inner circle assuring him he is active and well.

For almost two weeks now Raila has not made a public appearance, a time when ODM is preparing to celebrate 20 years since its formation.

Raila’s last public engagement was on September 22 when he attended an ODM Parliamentary Group meeting at the Argyle Grand Hotel. Since then he has missed key events including the issuance of nomination certificates to party candidates for the upcoming by-elections.

Reports have been circulating that Raila recently sought medical attention abroad before being admitted to The Nairobi Hospital where doctors allegedly told him to slow down on politics. But his close allies have strongly denied this.

National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, a close friend of Raila, said he spoke to him and is on his way to see him. “I spoke to him and I’m on my way to see him. He is at the gym—how can you say he is unwell?” Junet asked, dismissing the speculation.

At 80 years old Raila Odinga is one of the most powerful men in Kenyan politics. His absence has only added to public curiosity about his health and future politics especially as ODM marks 20 years since its formation.
