STEM Teachers Get the Edge as TSC’s New Hiring Plan Squeezes Out Humanities

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced its latest recruitment drive targeting about 24,000 intern positions and it will lean heavily on teachers with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) qualifications.

According to the commission’s grading system, the vacancies will mainly cater for Junior Secondary School staffing needs and the ongoing rollout of Competency Based Education (CBE).

Special Training Means Special Advantage

Acting TSC CEO Eveleen Mitei said candidates trained by specialized institutions like Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa, Teacher Induction, Mentorship and Coaching programme, Kenya National Examinations Council and Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development will have extra points in the recruitment process.

She said the selection process will adhere strictly to Articles 10 and 232 of the Constitution to ensure governance values of transparency, accountability, fair competition and merit.

Promotion Guidelines for 2025/26 Released

Alongside recruitment, TSC has released new promotion guidelines that align with existing frameworks like Career Progression Guidelines for Teachers (2018) and Code of Regulations for Teachers (2015) to ensure equity, reward performance, recognize experience and integrate affirmative action in promotions.

To be eligible for promotion, a teacher must have served for at least three years in their current grade. Those who have recently faced disciplinary action or received administrative warnings will have waiting periods before being considered.

Academic Credentials and Scoring

For the highest post of Chief Principal (Grade D5/T-Scale 15), candidates can score:

  • 5 points for a doctorate,
  • 4 points for a master’s degree,
  • 3 points for a bachelor’s degree.

County selection panels will handle interviews for deputy principals and post-primary school teachers while regional panels will interview principals of secondary schools and teacher training colleges.

Inclusivity and Compliance

Promotions will consider gender balance, disability inclusion and regional diversity with constitutional provisions that no more than two-thirds of promoted teachers should be of the same gender.

Results will be posted on TSC website and successful candidates will have to accept the offer within 30 days. A monitoring system will track compliance, fairness and integrity in the process.
