Teargas Disrupts Kitengela Rally as Sifuna and Babu Owino Address Supporters

Teargas Disrupts Kitengela Rally as Sifuna and Babu Owino Address Supporters

Kitengela residents witnessed a tense moment on Saturday when police fired teargas at a rally organized by an ODM faction led by Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino.

The incident unfolded just as Sifuna was introducing leaders who had joined him at the event. Videos shared widely online show thick plumes of smoke sending attendees scattering for safety. The reason behind the police intervention remained unclear at the time.

Sifuna Urges Calm Amid Chaos

Even as the smoke engulfed the rally, Sifuna was quick to address the growing anxiety among supporters. “You will not disrupt our meeting. Why are you throwing teargas at us? Relax so that we can continue with the meeting. Stop threatening us,” he stated, moments before another canister was reportedly thrown.

The calm demeanor of the ODM senator did little to prevent the rally from being interrupted. Media personnel also faced disruptions, making coverage of the event challenging.

Thousands Turn Out Despite Disruption

Despite the chaotic scene, the rally saw a strong turnout. Thousands had gathered in Kitengela to receive their leaders following a church service at St. Peter’s Orkeju Emunyak ACK Church earlier in the day. The disruption did not entirely overshadow the event, with attendees still engaging with the party leaders.

While the teargas forced an abrupt end to the meeting, supporters described the day as memorable, highlighting the dedication of the ODM leaders and the enthusiasm of the crowd.

Kitengela Rally Leaves Questions

Observers are now left wondering what prompted the police action. Was it a preventive measure, or did something escalate at the rally? The incident raises questions about the balance between public order and citizens’ right to political assembly.
