Three Pupils Confirmed Dead After School Latrine Collapse in Uasin Gishu.
Three pupils died after a pit latrine collapsed at Queen of Angels Turbo School in Uasin Gishu County. The incident occurred on 9 July 2025 at the private Catholic-sponsored school near Turbo Girls High School.
According to Turbo Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Wekesa, the pupils were using the facility when it caved in. Police officers and rescue personnel were deployed to the scene to help in the rescue mission.
Wekesa said several pupils were rescued from the rubble and rushed to hospital in critical condition while three girls all below 10 and in Grade One and Two were pronounced dead. An excavator was brought in to help in excavation and to verify if there were other pupils trapped under the debris.
Investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the collapse. Preliminary reports indicate heavy rainfall in the area which has caused flooding and soil erosion including at the school compound.
Father Mathew Too, Education Secretary for Catholic schools under Eldoret Catholic Diocese said the latrine had no visible signs of structural damage before the incident. He said engineers have been instructed to carry out a thorough inspection of all school facilities to ensure safety.
Wilson Sawe, Director of Administration and Planning at Uasin Gishu County Department of Education also visited the school and confirmed the school is partly boarding and partly day and is undergoing a safety audit.
Sawe said “We are saddened by this incident and have taken measures to ensure all other pupils are safe. We will wait for the investigations to establish the cause.” He added the Ministry of Education has directed immediate inspection of all schools in the region with priority on structural integrity assessment during the ongoing rains.

More updates will be given once the scene is cleared and technical assessments are done.
