U.S. Yet to Open Diversity Visa 2027 Registration, Warns of Online Scams

The US government has shot down reports claiming the DV-2027 registration period has opened, saying that no such thing has happened yet.

In a statement from the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, officials say the DV-2027 entry period is still firmly closed – and they’re warning people to ignore the dodgy claims that say otherwise.

“We have to tell you that the Diversity Visa 2027 entry period is still not open at the moment. We’ve seen reports of people making fake claims saying DV-2027 is open and all sorts of shady operators claiming they can help you get a leg up on being picked. But this is complete rubbish,” the statement says in no uncertain terms.

The department is keen to remind people that only the official channels will get the real lowdown on any updates, including registration dates or changes to the whole process. “When DV-2027 registration does finally happen, we’ll make sure to put out the info through our proper channels,” they add.

This all comes on the back of the US government’s recent decision to introduce a new $1 (Ksh130) electronic registration fee for Diversity Visa applicants – a new cost that’ll come into play when the DV-2027 registration finally opens. It’s the first time people will have to stump up cash just to enter the Green Card lottery.

According to the Department of State, the new fee is a way to spread the costs a bit more evenly – right now it’s the people who get picked for further processing who end up footing the bill.

Those who do get picked for an interview will still have to pay the existing $330 (Ksh42,619) visa application fee. The department is also very clear that the new registration fee isn’t refundable, and can’t be transferred to a later lottery year – whether you get picked or not.

The Diversity Visa programme – also known as the Green Card Lottery – hands out up to 55,000 permanent residency visas every year to people from countries that don’t have much of a history of sending immigrants to the US.
