Kinanie MCA Francis Kavyu Joins UDA, Sets Sights on Mavoko Parliamentary Seat
UDA has stepped up its efforts to strengthen its foothold in Ukambani after Kinanie MCA Francis Kavyu defected to the ruling party and announced plans to contest the Mavoko parliamentary seat in 2027.
Kavyu was formally received into the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) over the weekend by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Vincent Musyoka Kawaya, in a move that could inject fresh momentum into the ruling party’s grassroots mobilisation efforts in Machakos County.
The MCA’s decision to join UDA comes as the ruling party intensifies its efforts to expand its political influence across Machakos, Kitui and Makueni—areas that have traditionally been associated with the opposition.
Following his defection, Kavyu declared that he intends to seek the Mavoko parliamentary seat on a UDA ticket in the 2027 General Election.
His announcement could set up a potentially competitive battle for the party’s nomination, particularly if other aspirants emerge ahead of the election.
Speaking during his unveiling, Kavyu framed his political ambitions around development, employment and improvements to basic infrastructure.
“Today we are here to start the journey to deliver Mavoko Constituency. We are saying yes to better roads, sanitation and jobs for our young people. Those who believe it is time for Mavoko to change, I urge you to join me in this journey,” Kavyu said.
UDA targets opposition strongholds
Kavyu’s defection is significant because Ukambani has historically been a major political base for opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka and his political allies.
The move comes against the backdrop of heightened political positioning ahead of the 2027 General Election, with parties seeking to build support beyond their traditional strongholds.
Kalonzo has repeatedly maintained that he will remain in the opposition despite speculation about possible engagement with President William Ruto’s administration.
On Thursday, July 30, Kalonzo reiterated his opposition stance, ruling out cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza administration and dismissing speculation that he was preparing for talks or a political agreement with President Ruto.
He has instead maintained that the opposition should remain united as the country moves towards the 2027 elections.
Political defections reshape 2027 battle
Kavyu’s move is part of a wider pattern of political realignments taking place across Kenya ahead of the next General Election.
UDA has experienced defections of its own in recent months, including the departure of Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha, who joined Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata also left UDA before subsequently joining DCP, highlighting the increasingly fluid political landscape ahead of 2027.
However, the ruling party has simultaneously continued its recruitment drive, seeking to attract politicians from opposition and other parties.
One of the latest high-profile recruits was former Samburu Woman Representative Maison Leshoomo, who joined UDA on Saturday after being received by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during a political event in Samburu County.
Leshoomo crossed over alongside several other opposition-aligned politicians.
Explaining her decision, she said:
“I was in Jubilee because of Uhuru Kenyatta. When Uhuru gave out Jubilee, I decided to leave. Let us go back to the government.”
Among those reported to have joined UDA alongside Leshoomo were former Samburu North MP Alois Lentoimanga, Samburu Senate aspirant Lkitonga Lengolos, Suguta Ward MCA James Leleruk, Janet Lavasanti and former Samburu County Assembly Deputy Speaker Adamson Lanyasunya.
The latest defections underscore the growing political contest for influence ahead of 2027, with both the ruling coalition and opposition formations seeking to consolidate their bases while making inroads into areas traditionally dominated by rival parties.
For Kavyu, however, the immediate political test will be Mavoko, where his decision to seek the parliamentary seat under the UDA banner is likely to place him at the centre of the constituency’s emerging 2027 contest.
