A young protester caught the attention and amusement of many Kenyans on June 7, 2025, during Saba Saba demos in Nairobi’s CBD after claiming in a viral video to be a journalist from Equity Bank. His broken English and funny responses went viral and people started calling for him to be supported.

He was wearing a black T-shirt with the Equity Bank logo and introduced himself as a “press” from the bank. In the video shared on platform X (formerly Twitter), he said, “I’m press from Equity, see the label, the situation you can see, there are no cars, only Mahindra,” referring to the scene in the CBD during the protests.

When asked what “press” meant, he jokingly replied, “It’s a communication centre that comes together,” and people laughed at his creative and confident improvisation.

Despite the seriousness of the Saba Saba protests, the young man’s satire and self expression brought some levity. At one point he almost broke character and said he had come to join the protests before quickly recovering and said, “As a press, I’m going to record all the coming on,” in a mistaken attempt to describe what was going to happen.

His interaction ended with a joyful exclamation in Kikuyu—“ahh onee!”—after being referred to as “Mr. Press,” and people loved him for it.

The video has gone viral and many Kenyans are commending the young man’s natural charm and intelligence. Social media users are urging Equity Bank to find him and support him, with some suggesting he be enrolled in the bank’s Wings to Fly scholarship program.

Public Reactions:

  • @PeterKamondeN: “@KeEquityBank you have a missed call from your press man.”
  • @1738but_in2012: “Equity should find him and take him back to school. One of the greatest benchmarks of intelligence is humour.”
  • @gidbara: “He can be enrolled in Equity Wings to Fly program @KeEquityBank.”
  • @Kimaku_w: “Access to basic education is good. Huyu hawezi wacha blank space in an exam. Ana rumour monger anapata half marks.

The Equity pressman video shows how humor and resourcefulness can come out even in the midst of national protests. As the video goes on, people are waiting for Equity Bank or other institutions to support him further his education and tap into his talent.
